Photography Careers Initial Research
- Create a new page on your Foxcroft Digital Portfolio titled "Careers."
- Begin with a list of all the possible career fields that are available to photographers. Keep the main examples broad and then expand on each one with a list that gets more and more narrow. For example, Portrait Photography is a broad career field, and nested under that includes Weddings, Families, Seniors, etc.
- Then start researching the many different aspects of a single career of your choosing. It may overlap with a discipline that you ultimately intend to pursue in the future. Search for real photography job postings in that field on sites like Indeed or LinkedIn. You can focus on this area, the town where you live, or where you would eventually like to live in the future. The company you will work for does have to exist, but they do not have to be hiring at this time.
- Below is an outline of the slides you will be creating to introduce this photography career field to your classmates. You will also be outlining a resume that projects ten years from now with real educational and work experiences that could actually help you earn that job in the future.
- The ultimate goal is for you to produce a final photography portfolio that you could bring to an interview for this position.
Final Project Requirements
Slide 1: Career Intro
- This is the opening slide. Be sure to include your full name and your photography career choice with a brief description
- State who you want to work for, what position you are interested in, and what you want to do for your dream job in the field of photography. Set the current date for ten years from now since you are projecting into the future.
- Provide a description of the company and highlight the specific skills, years of experience, and/or degree requirements that are necessary for that job as well as the anticipated salary range.
- Include 10 examples of professional work within that career (one image per slide). These examples should be a large scope of work from a variety of photographers with extremely different approaches. Provide information on each artist including their name, who they were working for, and when the photograph was taken.
- List all relevant education, training, and certifications. Include degree(s) awarded, school(s) attended, dates of attendance, along with program/major courses. List the most recent first. High School will be listed last
- Find three or more positions in your area or the areas in which you would like to live. Include the name of the employer, location, position title, dates of employment, and statement of duties or accomplishments. List the most recent first (most experienced to least experienced). Since you are projecting out ten years from now, you could cover four years in college and six years in the workforce.
- List your own qualifications, skills, and achievements. These can be technical skills both in and outside of the darkroom. Be sure to offer your experience working with any other art materials and/or computer software.
- Highlight any formal recognitions (professional, academic, or extra curricular).
- Provide the name of professional associations, clubs, or community activities in which you participate.
- Your goal is to add work to your portfolio that BEST exemplifies your qualifications and skills in a UNIQUE way. It is a competitive world out there and you need to utilize your strengths in order to be successful. Explain the process you will be going through to get the very best outcome for this assignment. Include shooting requirements, all necessary materials, and anticipated results. Be sure to list any people who will be involved as well.
- Provide at least 5 final images that show the full breadth of your experience. You can work with digital or film processes and any variety of print techniques. Be experimental and build on lessons you have already learned.
- Provide links to all sites visiting, including the professional examples and job listings. It is recommended that you use Noodle Tools to organize your research.
